Hawaiʻi Hurricane Kit Checklist

Pack this before a watch is issued, not after. Once a warning is in effect, stores are the last place you want to be.

• Water, 1 gallon per person per day
• Food that needs no cooking
• Medications, plus batteries for any medical device
• Phone charger and a power bank
• Flashlight and spare batteries
• Cash in small bills
• ID and important documents in a bag
• First aid kit
• Pet food, leash or carrier, and their water
• Cooler with ice for medication that needs refrigeration

A refuge area is a last resort, not a first choice. Your own home, a friend or family member's home, or even your workplace may be safer than a public hurricane refuge area, because those are ordinary buildings that were never built or retrofitted to a storm shelter standard. Pick two places outside your evacuation zone now, and go to a public site only if you have no safer option. This is the county's own guidance, repeated here because it is the most useful thing on this page.
