Natural warnings come first

Do not wait for an official alert. If you are on the coast and any of these happen, move inland or uphill immediately, on foot if the roads are jammed: A locally generated tsunami can arrive in minutes, faster than any warning system can reach you. The natural signs are the warning.

For a tsunami generated far away, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center usually has hours of lead time and sirens will sound. For one generated close to the islands, they may not.

What each tsunami product means

A zone is not a warning

Every island has mapped tsunami evacuation zones, and the live map can draw them as an optional layer. Being inside one does not mean anything is happening. It means that if a warning is ever issued, that is the area you would need to leave. Look yours up on a calm day, and know the route out of it before you need it.
