Natural warnings come first

Do not wait for an official alert. If you are on the coast and any of these happen, move inland or uphill immediately, on foot if the roads are jammed:

An earthquake strong enough that it is hard to stand, or one that lasts 20 seconds or more.
The ocean suddenly draws back and exposes reef or sea floor, or suddenly rises.
A loud roar from the ocean, like a train or an aircraft.

A locally generated tsunami can arrive in minutes, faster than any warning system can reach you. The natural signs are the warning.

For a tsunami generated far away, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center usually has hours of lead time and sirens will sound. For one generated close to the islands, they may not.

What each tsunami product means

Warning: dangerous flooding is expected or already happening. Evacuate the evacuation zone now, following county instructions.
Advisory: strong currents and dangerous waves are expected, but widespread inland flooding is not. Stay out of the water and off beaches, piers and harbors.
Watch: a distant event may produce a tsunami. Stay alert and be ready to act.
Information Statement: an earthquake occurred, and there is no tsunami threat, or the threat is being evaluated.

A zone is not a warning

Every island has mapped tsunami evacuation zones, and the live map can draw them as an optional layer. Being inside one does not mean anything is happening. It means that if a warning is ever issued, that is the area you would need to leave. Look yours up on a calm day, and know the route out of it before you need it.
